The Truth About Green Tripe - The Unsung Hero of Gut Health
When it comes to your dog’s health, everything starts in the gut. A strong digestive system doesn’t just help with nutrient absorption - it influences immunity, energy levels, skin, and overall wellbeing. One of the most powerful (and often overlooked) foods to support that balance is green tripe - the raw, nutrient-dense superfood that dogs can’t get enough of.
What Is Green Tripe?
Green tripe is the unprocessed stomach lining of grazing animals like cows, sheep, or deer. Its natural, slightly greenish colour comes from the plant matter and digestive enzymes remaining in the stomach - a sign that it’s untreated and unbleached, just as nature intended.
It’s also… pungent. The smell might turn up your nose, but to your dog, it’s irresistible - and for good reason. In the wild, the stomach contents of herbivores are one of the richest natural sources of good bacteria and digestive enzymes, which help carnivores process their meals more efficiently.
Why Dogs (and Cats) Benefit from Tripe
Just like in humans, your pet’s gut health affects everything - from digestion to immunity and even mood. Green tripe is nature’s way of keeping that balance in check.
Key benefits of green tripe:
- Promotes a healthy gut - packed with natural prebiotics and probiotics that feed beneficial gut bacteria.
- Aids digestion - digestive enzymes in tripe help your pet absorb nutrients more effectively from other foods.
- Boosts immunity - a balanced gut microbiome supports the body’s natural defences.
- Supports skin & coat health - improved nutrient absorption leads to better skin condition and a shinier coat.
- Encourages picky eaters - dogs go crazy for the smell and taste, making it an easy add-in for fussy pets.
How to Feed Green Tripe Safely
Tripe is nutrient-rich, but a little goes a long way.
-
Start small - mix 1–2 tablespoons (for small dogs) or up to ¼ cup (for large dogs) into their regular raw meal a few times per week.
(As a guide, tripe should make up around 5–10% of your dog’s total daily diet - roughly the same number of grams as their body weight in kilograms. For example, a 20 kg dog would have about 20 g of tripe per day.) - Introduce slowly - start with small portions and increase gradually. This allows their digestive system to adjust and helps you monitor tolerance.
- For puppies - introduce even more gradually, and always in very small portions. Puppies have sensitive stomachs, so keep tripe under 5% of their daily intake at first, increasing only as they grow.
- Avoid overfeeding - too much tripe can cause loose stools (just like too much fruit for us!).
- Store properly - always keep tripe frozen or refrigerated, and wash hands after handling.
For those who can’t stand the smell, there’s good news - our Protection Plus supplement (a probiotic + prebiotic blend available in 500ml or 1L bottles) is a great alternative, delivering similar gut-health benefits without the odour.
When to Use Tripe
Green tripe can be especially helpful if your pet:
- Has had antibiotics or tummy upsets.
- Is transitioning to a raw diet.
- Struggles with nutrient absorption or inconsistent stools.
- Needs encouragement to eat or take medication - tripe’s strong smell hides the scent of pills beautifully!
Product Spotlight: Our Green Tripe Roll
Our Green Tripe Roll is made from 100% tripe - predominantly lamb tripe, though occasionally beef (bovine) tripe is used when supply is limited.
Both sources offer the same nutritional benefits, as the goodness of green tripe comes from the enzymes and probiotics within the stomach lining itself, not the specific protein type.
** If your dog has known beef sensitivities, it’s always best to check with us before feeding.

The Bottom Line
Green tripe might not smell great to us, but to your pet, it’s pure gold. As part of a balanced raw feeding routine, it helps nurture a healthy gut - and a healthy gut means a stronger immune system, better nutrient absorption, and a happier, more vibrant pet.
Gut health = overall health. That’s the truth about tripe.
