7 Tips for Looking After Your Pets Health & Wellbeing
For so many of us, our pets are a part of our family. So taking care of them and giving them every opportunity to live a healthy life is important.
Taking on a pet is a big commitment and comes with responsibility. But when you take the time to look after them, the joy your pet will give you and your family will be worth it.
We’ve put together out top tips for looking after your pets so you can ensure they are healthy, happy and enjoying life.
1. Regular vet visits
You should aim to take your pet to your vet at least once a year for a regular check over. There are many things that could go unnoticed – like gum and teeth health, stomach or digestive issues, skin allergies or simply their weight!
Some pets, such as cats, may not enjoy this process (whereas your dog probably loves a car ride!). The sooner you can get your cat used to their cage/carrier, the easier it will be for both of you.
2 – Vaccinations
Keeping on top of your pets vaccinations is important. These vaccination protect them from common illnesses and diseases (some of which can be vital) and are crucial especially in the first year of their life.
They also help to avoid the spread of diseases in animals within your community. Your veterinarian will provide you with a vaccination schedule and booking your appointments in advance is a great way to avoid forgetting to go!
3 – A healthy, nutritious diet
Offering a healthy, nutritious diet and fresh (preferably filytered) water is one of the best ways to look after your pet. Providing the right mixture of foods will give your pet all the nutrients they need for a healthy life.
Raw diets have increased in popularity and we’re big believers in raw feeding. In one of our blogs, we’ve outlined the benefits for both you and your pet, when you implement raw feeding Some of the benefits include:
- Superior bone and joint health
- Strengthened immune system
- Better digestion
- Better dental hygiene and stronger teeth
- Shinier, softer coat and healthier skin
- Reduced allergies and intolerance
- Weight control
- Stabilized energy levels
4 – Regular exercise
We’re sure you understand the importance of regular exercise for both your mental and physical wellbeing. Well, the same applies for your pets! They get bored and enjoy getting out in nature just as much as we do!
Whether it’s taking them for a walk/run, or playing with them regularly, it will make a big difference to your pets life. All pets will differ and require more or less exercise or play than others. For example, dogs, of course, are going to need a lot more exercise than a cat. And then some breeds and species will require more than stimulation than others.
If you’re planning on going away, even for just a short time, it pays to organise family, friends, or even a pet sitter to step in to keep their exercise routine up.
As long as you are aware of their needs and doing all you can to meet those needs, your pet will be happy.
5 – Regular socialising
Many pets, especially dogs, love to socialise. You could take your dog to the local dog park/recreation areas to give them access to run around and play with other dogs. Or, simply taking them for a walk/run in your neighbourhood where there’s bound to be other dogs is enough.
It does pay to be mindful of your pets behavioural traits to ensure you don’t run into trouble. Are they good around other dogs? If not, its probably a good idea to get in touch with your local vet for recommendations on trainers in your area that can help with this.
And, of course, pay attention to the rules at your local parks and recreation areas. Nobody wants a dog running straight at them in an on-lead area – no matter how friendly they are!
6 – Sufficient shelter
Are you providing your pet with a safe, secure and clean habitat for them to live in? This includes:
- Cover and shelter to deal with the weather. If it’s raining or throughout the winter months, they’ll need a covered, warm area. The same goes for those hot summer months – ensure there is somewhere for them to rest out of the sun.
- Clean, fresh water
- Safety. If your cat likes to wonder and fight with other neighbourhood cats, it may pay to keep them indoors whenever possible. Or, for dogs, you should ensure your section is fully-fenced so they have room to move around off lead and can’t escape.
- Cleanliness. Nobody likes to live in squalor! Make sure (if you have one) that any litter trays are changed and replaced regularly. In general, your pets area should be kept clean at all times.
7 – Regular Grooming
Many pets can and will regularly groom themselves, but it still pays to help them keep on top of it either yourself or with the help of a local groomer. There are many products like brushes, soaps and other tools to help you groom your pet. This will also give you the opportunity to check for things such as fleas or skin issues.
